Frequently Asked Questions
This is a unique project and I’m sure you have some questions. I’ll do my best to answer them.
What is all this?
The idea is simple one: to try and make the world’s largest cross stitch by selling 2,000,000 stitches for $2 each. You buy ‘Blocks’ of stitches, design them, and then see them get stitched.
Everyone is welcome to buy stitches, which are available in 100-stitch 'Blocks' (each measuring 10x10 stitches). The cross stitch is divided into 20,022 of these 100-stitch blocks (there are actually 2,002,200 stitches in total because of how the math works out). I’m selling them in 100-stitch blocks because anything smaller would be too small to convey anything effectively.
You can buy as many stitches as you’d like, so long as there are some available. When you buy stitches, you can then display an image/ad/logo of your choice with the stitches you have purchased.
The pattern will fill in as stitches are purchased. As the pattern fills in so will the actual physical cross stitch. Every stitch you buy and design WILL be hand stitched, by me, onto what will (hopefully) become the world’s largest cross stitch.
So what exactly am I buying? Stitches?
Ultimately you’re buying a spot on what I hope will become the world’s largest cross stitch, and deciding what that spot will look like. You buy the ‘Block’ of stitches, you design/color them however you’d like, and then I stitch them into the project. At the end of the project we’ll have (hopefully) crowdsourced the pattern for the world’s largest cross stitch and you’ll get to show everybody you know which part you’re responsible for.
How do I submit my design to you?
This will likely evolve over time, but for now the best way to submit a design is to upload an FCJSON file from FlossCross.com via our Artwork Upload form.
How long will it take to make a cross stitch of this size?
It depends largely on what the pattern is. Blocks of consistent colors take less time to stitch than lots of different colors. In general, though, the goal would be 10 ‘Blocks’ per day of stitching. With 20,022 blocks available, that’s about 2,000 days of stitching, which I estimate would take between 8 and 10 years.
8 to 10 YEARS!?
Yes.
It will be a herculean effort and will become a full-time endeavor, hence the need for selling stitches instead of just doing this myself. Alas, I am not independently wealthy, and if I’m going to devote the better part of my life to this for the next decade I’ll need money to feed my children, pay my mortgage, get health insurance, etc etc etc.
When will you stitch the stitches that I designed for you?
I’ll be approaching this from a first-purchased-first-stitched perspective. If there are a million stitches in front of you in line, well, it’ll be a little bit before I get to you.
I do plan to offer a “skip to the front of the line” option at checkout but it will cost extra and likely won’t be cheap.
Do I get to decide where on the finished piece you put my stitches?
As a general rule, no, but everything has its price. I’m going to be starting in the upper left and working my way across and down. If you want to be somewhere specific you can reach out and we can see what that looks like.
How big will the final cross stitch be?
The fabric I use allows for 14 stitches per inch, which will put the finished piece at around 100in x 100in, or around 8.5ft x 8.5ft.
What happens to the final completed piece?
A really expensive and large frame, along with a stay at a museum (because really, what museum wouldn’t want to display this thing!?).
What’s a “Stitch List?”
For each purchase you make you get added to the “Stitch List,” which is effectively a guestbook for those who have contributed to the project. It will display how many stitches were purchased along with a name/phrase of your choice that hyperlinks to a (appropriate) website of your choosing.
What’s the fine print?
Minimum Purchase: $100 USD (1 Block - 10x10). Feel free to buy as many as you like.
You are purchasing a spot on what I hope will become the world’s largest cross stitch.
The image you submit cannot be changed once it has been stitched. Changes prior to stitching can be requested and will be addressed on a case-by-case basis.
No refunds once your stitches have been accepted and included in the pattern.
No obscene/offensive/adult images will be accepted.
Images must be the exact size you have paid for (eg. 100 stitches = 10x10 stitches)
You must have the right to use the image you provide.
There might be occasional downtime for site maintenance but that will be kept to a minimum and will only be done when switching servers or upgrading
Your stitches will be added to the pattern within 2 business days from time of art submission.
I AM NOT PROMISING THAT A WORLD RECORD WILL BE BROKEN.
I AM PROMISING that if you buy the stitches, I will stitch them. The current world record is around 1.1M stitches. If we sell more stitches than that, and nobody increases the record, then we’ll beat it. Assuming I don’t die, lose the physical ability to cross stitch, or have some calamity take place that destroys the project.
What if you don’t get enough submissions to challenge the world record?
That would be a shame, but is possible. I can’t PROMISE a world record, all I can promise is that every single stitch purchased WILL be stitched and WILL be a part of the world record should the record be achieved.
You can help me by promoting this project and getting it in front of as many eyes as you can.
What guarantee do we have that you won’t just take our money and run?
At the end of the day, none. But I’m using my real name (Michael Snively) and my real reputation for this project, and I’d really rather not see those associated with a giant internet scam and scandal. That’s why this isn’t some meme-coin, NFT, or crypto project. It’s real - it’s a real physical thing that I’m making and that you get to help me make.
I’ve got a 10+ years of cross stitching experience and I’ve wanted a badass world record for a good long while now. If you commit, I’ll commit.
Will you provide status updates?
Absolutely! This website will always host the most up-to-date image of the pattern. I will also update the number of stitches completed, number remaining, and other fun stats on the site.
There will also be livestreams, VODs, pictures, and other pieces of media that will document and catalogue the journey.
What is cross stitching?
Think of cross stitching like a textile-version of pixel art. Using a special piece of fabric with small holes arranged in a grid, and thread of different (standardized) colors, you stitch small X’s onto the fabric into whatever pixelated pattern your heart desires.
For a much better description of cross stitching, I recommend you Google your check out YouTube.
